EMO is the largest transhipment terminal for coal and iron ore in Western Europe and occupies a top position in the dry bulk market. Modern and multifunctional, the EMO terminal is strategically located at the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. In addition to loading and unloading ships, rail cars and tbarges, the EMO terminal offers added-value services such as screening, blending and washing coal. The terminal has grown rapidly since 1973 and has an excellent track record in storage and transhipment.

EMO operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We handle large bulk shipments; our discharge capacity is 42 million tonnes and our throughput capacity is 60 million tonnes. EMO provides the giant handling facilities that the world’s largest bulk carriers require. Our terminal is a major hub in transporting coal and iron ore from all over the world to the large European hinterland. Our 160-hectare surface area holds seven million tonnes of storage capacity. Compared to other dry bulk terminals, EMO is ideally located on a 23 m deep waterway connected directly to the North Sea. Rotterdam harbour has excellent rail and waterway connections to the rest of Europe.
Value-added services
In addition to facilities for the storage and transhipment of coal and iron ore, EMO offers customers and potential customers value-added services, for example, in supplying coal and biomass-fired power plants. EMO can play a major role in processing biomass due to our knowledge of coal and biomass storage, logistics and technology, in combination with the room our terminal has for expansion.
